Bill Self’s Early Life and Career
Bill Self was born in May of 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From a young age, Self was around sports. His father, Bud Self, was a basketball coach and his mother, Katie Self, was a high school physical education teacher. When he was in high school, he played basketball and was recruited by Oklahoma State University. He decided to go to the University of Oklahoma instead.

Born inOklahoma City, Oklahoma, Self was raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. His father, Bill Self Sr., was a basketball player and coach at Oklahoma Baptist University. His mother, Shirley Self, was a high school English teacher. When he was in the third grade, his family moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he attended grade school and high school. In high school, he played on the varsity basketball team for one year. After graduating from high school in 1981, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Bill Self’s college playing career
born on December 27, 1952, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Self was raised in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Edmond Memorial High School in 1971. He played college basketball at Oklahoma State University from 1971 to 1974. As a senior cowinner of the1974–75 Big Eight Conference season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, he helped lead the Cowboys to a share of the conference championship and an appearance in that year’s NCAA Tournament.
Bill Self’s early coaching career
After playing basketball and graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1985, Self began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater under Billy Tubbs. After three seasons as an assistant coach, Self was named head coach at the University of Tulsa, where he compiled a record of 52–20 in three seasons. In his first season as head coach, the Golden Hurricane finished with a 25–3 overall record and won the Conference USA tournament championship. In 1998, Tulsa reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988; Self led Tulsa to the Round of 32 before being defeated by eventual national champion Kentucky.

Bill Self has been the head coach of the Jayhawks men’s basketball team at the University of Kansas since 2003. Prior to that, he was the head coach at the University of Illinois from 2001 to 2003. Before that, he coached at the University of Tulsa from 1998 to 2000.
Bill Self’s coaching record at Kansas
Bill Self is in his 18th season as head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks, a program he has led to 16 consecutive Big 12 regular-season championships, 15 conference tournament titles, three Final Fours and the 2008 national championship.
Under Self, the Jayhawks have been one of the most consistent programs in college basketball, finishing first or second in the Big 12 standings every year since 2004-05. Kansas has also won at least 30 games in each of the last 13 seasons, a streak that is tied for second-longest in NCAA history.

In his 18 seasons as head coach at Kansas, Bill Self has led the Jayhawks to 15 Big 12 regular-season championships, including an unprecedented 13 consecutive titles from 2005 to 2017. He’s also guided Kansas to four Big 12 tournament championships and three Final Fours, with the Jayhawks losing in the national championship game in 2008 to Kentucky and in 2012 to Anthony Davis and John Calipari’s Wildcats.

In 2002, the University of Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team hired Bill Self to replace Roy Williams as their head coach. In his first season, Self led the Jayhawks to a 30-8 record and a NCAA tournament appearance. The following year, Self coached the Jayhawks to a 32-4 record and another NCAA tournament appearance. In 2004, Self coached the Jayhawks to a 27-8 record and another NCAA tournament appearance. In 2005, Self led the Jayhawks to a 35-4 record and their first NCAA National Championship in men’s basketball.
In 2007, Self signed a contract extension with Kansas that would keep him as the head coach of the Jayhawks through the 2012-2013 season. The extension also increased his salary from $1.8 million per year to $3 million per year. In 2012, Self signed another contract extension with Kansas that would keep him as the head coach of the Jayhawks through the 2021-2022 season. The extension also increased his salary from $3 million per year to $4 million per year.
In 2013, Self was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

After a highly successful 17-year career at the University of Kansas, Bill Self decided to move on to coach at the University of Illinois. Self had an instant impact on the Illini, leading them to the NCAA tournament in his first season.

After his time at Kansas, Bill Self took a head coaching position at the University of Oklahoma. He coached there for one season before returning to Kansas.

Bill Self is currently the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Kansas. He has held this position since 2003, when he took over for Roy Williams. During his time at Kansas, Self has led the Jayhawks to thirteen consecutive Big 12 regular season titles, five conference tournament titles, and three Final Four appearances. He has also been named National Coach of the Year three times.
