History
The city of Americus was first settled in 1867, when builders came to construct the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The town was named for American settler W. A. Myers. The first post office in Americus was established in 1869, with Myers as the first postmaster. In 1873, the first schoolhouse was built in Americus.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 2,046 people, 832 households, and 546 families living in the city. The population density was 1,555.5 inhabitants per square mile ( 601.1/km2). There were 934 housing units at an average density of 698.7 per square mile ( 269.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.4% White, 0.0% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 832 households of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.0% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older
Economy
The economy of Americus, Kansas is largely based on agriculture. The city is located in the heart of the Kansas Flint Hills, and many of the city’s residents work in the cattle ranching industry. There are also several large dairy farms located in and around Americus. In addition to agriculture, there are a number of businesses and industries located in Americus, including a metal fabrication plant, a concrete company, and a manufacturer of agricultural equipment.
Education
The public schools in Americus are part of Unified School District 377. South wind Prairie Elementary School serves grades K-5, while Americus-Tioga High School is the local high school for grades 9-12.
Infrastructure
The town of Americus is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, about 50 miles east of Wichita. The nearest major airport is Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), about 60 miles away. The town is served by a small regional airport, Americus Municipal Airport (AMU), with limited commercial service.
Interstate 35 runs through the southern part of Americus, and State Highway 177 passes through the eastern part of town. Highway 177 leads northeast about 25 miles to Emporia, the county seat of Lyon County, and southwest about 30 miles to El Dorado, the county seat of Butler County.
