Kansas City is the largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had an estimated population of 488,943 in 2017, making it the 37th most-populous city in the United States. It is the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which straddles the Kansas–Missouri state line. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west.

The city was characterized by grit, determination and ingenuity from its earliest days as a frontier settlement through its rapid growth during the late 1800s, when it became a national center for commerce and culture.

History

The city features 30 skyscrapers, two inclines, a riverfront, and three entertainment districts. In 2016, Kansas City was ranked as the most livable city in the Midwest.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
In the early 1800s, many Americans were beginning to think about moving westward, beyond the Appalachian Mountains. At that time, the westernmost part of the United States was the Louisiana Territory, which had been purchased from France in 1803.
In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory. The Lewis and Clark Expedition set out from St. Louis in May of that year.
During their journey up the Missouri River, Lewis and Clark met with several Native American tribes. They also made important observations about the plants and animals they saw. In November 1805, the expedition reached present-day North Dakota, where they built Fort Mandan.
The following spring, they continued westward and reached the Pacific Ocean. After spending a winter in present-day Oregon, they began their journey back east in March 1806. They arrived back in St. Louis in September 1806.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition was important because it helped increase American knowledge about what was then the western part of the country. It also strengthened American claims to this territory.
The Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail was a 2,170-mile long trail used by American pioneers in the 19th century to travel from the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The trail stretched from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon. It passed through present-day Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and finally Montana before reaching its end.
The trail was used by more than 400,000 settlers between 1843 and 1869. It was especially popular during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Many of the pioneers who used the trail were families looking for a new home. They would travel west in covered wagons pulled by oxen or horses.
The trip was not easy. The trail was full of dangerous obstacles like river crossings, buffalo stampedes, and sickness. But for those who made it to their destination, the journey was worth it. They found a new life full of opportunity in the West.

As of 2019, the population of Kansas City is estimated to be 490,000. The majority of the population is white (63.2%), followed by black or African American (24.8%), Hispanic or Latino (8.4%), and Asian (4.5%).

In the 2010 census, Kansas City’s population was 63.2% White (50.2% non-Hispanic white), 24.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.3% of the population
The five largest ancestry groups in Kansas City as of 2015 were: German (21%), Irish (15%), English (12%), African American (11%), and American (8%).
Economy
Kansas City’s economy is one of the most robust in the United States. The city’s central location and diverse economy has made it a hub for transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and technology. Kansas City is home to many major corporations, including Garmin, Sprint, and H&R Block. The city’s economy is also bolstered by a strong tourism sector.
Manufacturing
Kansas City’s economically strong manufacturing sector is based on production of aircraft parts, automobiles, computer equipment, pet food, printing and publishing products, processed foods, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The city is home to several large corporations including Garmin, Hallmark Cards, H&R Block and Seaboard Corporation. Harley-Davidson operates a large motorcycle assembly plant in Kansas City.
Agriculture
Kansas City is located in the middle of the United States, making it a prime location for agriculture. The city is known for its extensive farming and ranching heritage, and it remains an important part of the city’s economy. Kansas City is home to many large food companies, including Monsanto, Dole, and Smithfield. The city is also a major center for animal husbandry, with several large livestock auctions and sale barns.
Culture
Though it is the largest city in Missouri, some people are unaware of where Kansas City is located. It is actually situated on the Missouri-Kansas border. The city has a lot to offer in terms of culture. It is home to the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Ballet, and the Kansas City Opera. The city also has a number of museums, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City Museum.
Music
A large part of the city’s cultural life is based on music, particularly jazz. After the First World War and during Prohibition in the 1920s, speakeasies and nightclubs such as the negroid Sunrise Club, “Blue Heaven”, “The Spot”, “P Lo’s Place” and others dotted 12th Street (now The Paseo) and Vine Street (now 18th Street). After World War II, Kansas City became a center for African American music. Jay McShann’s band with Charlie Parker became nationally famous.[161] Charlie Parker was born in Kansas City but raised in neighboring Muskogee, Oklahoma. Billie Holiday also spent considerable time in Kansas City.[162] More recently, Chicago blues musicians have relocated to the city.
Sports
Sports are a big part of the Kansas City culture. The city is home to two professional sports teams – the Kansas City Royals (MLB) and the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL). Each team has a huge following in the city, and fans are very passionate about their team. There are also a number of minor league and college sports teams in the area.
Kansas City is also home to a number of major sporting events, including the Big 12 basketball tournament, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
