The History of Football in Kansas City
On November 24, 1959, the American Football League was born when Lamar Hunt, owner of the Dallas Texans, field a new football team in Kansas City. The Kansas City Chiefs, as they would come to be known, would go on to win three AFL Championships (1962, 1966, and 1969) and become one of the most iconic franchises in American Football.
Today, the Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most successful teams in the National Football League. Since Hunt’s initial investment over 60 years ago, the Chiefs have won five NFL Championships (1970, 1971 1972, 1973), appeared in ten Super Bowls (1970-1971, 1976-1977, 1981-1982 1986-1987), and won Super Bowl LIV in 2020.
The Chiefs play their home games at Arrowhead Stadium, which is widely considered to be one of the best stadiums in the NFL. Arrowhead Stadium is known for its sea of red-clad fans and its loud environment, which has been dubbed “The Loudest Stadium in the World.”

While the team plays at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, training and general team operations are based in nearby Berea, Ohio. The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970 remains the club’s last championship game triumph and appearance to date, and occurred in front of a then-Super Bowl record crowd of 82,495 persons at Miami Orange Bowl Stadium (since surpassed several times). The Chiefs were also the second team overall after the Green Bay Packers to appear in more than one Super Bowl (and first AFL team to do so), appearing a total of two times while compiling a combined record of 1–1. Between 1971 and 2019, they qualified for the playoffs a total of 28 times, winning eight AFC championships during that span; they played in Super Bowls I & IV – both losses – and Super Bowls 54 & 55 – both victories – during that time frame as well.

The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. The team was founded as an expansion franchise in 1969, and has participated in four World Series, winning in 1985 and 2015, and losing in 1980 and 2014.
