Leawood was incorporated in 1955 and is one of the Johnson County cities. The city was named for Oscar E. Leawood, a local98-year-old African American who was a civil rights pioneer and the city’s first African American elected official.

He laid out wide, tree-lined streets and provided picnic areas and playgrounds for residents. The first homes were built in 1956, and by 1957 the population had grown to 1,700.

It was named after the first postmaster, Oscar Lee
In 1857, Oscar Lee was appointed the first postmaster of Leawood, then located in the northeastern corner of Johnson County. The town was named for him. Mr. Lee’s log cabin served as both his home and the first post office from 1857 until 1863 when a new building was completed on the same site. The log cabin was donated to the city by his descendants in 1976 and today stands as a testament to his important role in the city’s history.

Incorporated as a city on October 26, 1960, Leawood originally was recognized as a township on August 6, 1952. It was named for Eli H. Lee (1835–1925), who operated a stagecoach stop near where the current Town Center Plaza now stands.[5] The city seal is taken from that used by early postmaster Eli Lee and pictures a lone buffalo by a log cabin and cottonwood tree.
