The city was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1917. The name Lenexa is derived from the Native American tribe who inhabited the area prior to European settler migration west on the Santa Fe Trail. A major factor in Lenexa’s growth during this time period was its location just south of the Shawnee Indian Reservation which allowed it to serve as a last stop on a major stagecoach route between Independence and Fort Gibson in Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma).
