The city’s name is taken from that of the borough of Manhattan in New York City, and was chosen by settlers from the East Coast of the United States who appeared to have liked their new home’s resemblance to that particular borough’s geography. The U.S. Army’s Fort Riley, located just northeast of Manhattan, was established in 1853 as a military post to protect settlers from hostile Native Americans.

It is situated atop a broad, flat landscape that features low hills (the Flint Hills) and is crosses by several shallow rivers and streams, most notably the Billingsley Creek tributary of the Kaw River to the north, and Wildcat Creek to the south.
History
The city of Manhattan, Kansas was founded in 1855 as a military outpost of the United States Army. It was named after the nearby Manhattan Island in New York City. The city has a long history of being a regional center for education and agriculture. The first college in the state of Kansas was founded here in 1858, and the city is home to Kansas State University, one of the largest universities in the state. Manhattan is also known as “The Little Apple”, due to its large number of apple orchards.
