History
Marion was founded in February, 1857. It was named after Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Marion was originally settled by German and Swiss immigrants. Over the years, Marion has become known for its annual Banana Festival, which celebrates the city’s history of growing bananas.
Early history
The town of Marion was founded in 1857, when a group of settlers from Marion County, Iowa, decided to move west to Kansas. The town was named after Marion County, which in turn had been named for General Francis Marion, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The first settlers arrived in October 1857 and built cabins just south of present-day Main Street.
During the Civil War, Marion became a stop on the Underground Railroad, and many fugitive slaves were helped to freedom. In 1865, the town was destroyed by a Tornado, but the settlers quickly rebuilt.
In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway (later acquired by the Chicago and North Western Railway) built a branch line from Council Grove through Marion to McPherson,Kansas. This spurred economic growth in Marion, and by 1890 the town had a population of 785.
20th century
In 1902, the Kansas legislature established the State Fair at Topeka. In September 1904, the Board of Control purchased 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land in central Topeka for construction of a new fairgrounds. The first building was an livestock barn completed in 1906. Two years later, the board began construction of a new grandstand. In 1910, with the new grandstand incomplete and surrounded by a construction zone, the State Fair was moved to this site from its previous location near 21st andWanamaker Streets in Topeka; it would remain here for six years. The grandstand was finished in time for the 1910 fair. It seated 3,200 people and cost $30,000 to build.

Marion is home to two high schools, Marion High School and Hillsboro High School. Both high schools are known for their academics and athletics. There are also several private schools in the area. Marion is also home to several colleges and universities, including Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus, Butler Community College, and Kansas Wesleyan University.
