History of Natoma
In the late 1800s, Natoma was a stop on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. It was originally called Blue Mound Station, but the name was changed to Natoma in 1893. The town was named after a nearby creek called Natoma Creek.
Natoma was founded in 1871
Natoma was founded in 1871 as a stop on the Salina and Southwestern Railroad. The first post office in Natoma was established in 1874. The town was named for a nearby creek, which in turn was named by early settlers for a Native American tribe that had once lived in the area.
Natoma began to grow rapidly in the 1880s, due largely to the influx of Swedish immigrants who came to farm the land around the town. By 1890, Natoma had a population of nearly 600, making it one of the largest towns in Osborne County. The early years of the twentieth century were a period of continued growth for Natoma, as new businesses and institutions were established and the town’s infrastructure improved.
However, the 1930s brought hard times to Natoma, as the nation was plunged into the Great Depression. Many businesses closed their doors and farmers struggled to make ends meet. Things began to improve during World War II, as increased demand for agricultural products helped boost the economy. However, after the war ended, Natoma once again fell on hard times. The population steadily declined throughout the second half of the twentieth century as young people left for larger cities in search of jobs and opportunity. Today, Natoma is a small town of just over 400 residents. Although it has been through some tough times over the years, it remains a friendly and welcoming place to call home
Natoma was named after the Natoma Indians who lived in the area
Natoma was originally settled by the Natoma Indians, who lived in the area for many years. The name “Natoma” comes from the Indian word for “people of the middle”, referring to their location between the Kansas and Missouri rivers.
In 1854, the first settlers arrived in Natoma, led by James Wilson and his family. They established a homestead just south of present-day Natoma, near Wilson Creek. More settlers soon followed, and by 1860 there were about 20 families living in the area.
During the Civil War, many of the men from Natoma enlisted in the Union army, and several fought in some of the war’s most famous battles, such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg.
After the war, Natoma began to grow rapidly. In 1866, a post office was established, and in 1867, a general store was opened. In 1868, a school was built, and by 1870 there were several businesses operating in Natoma.
In 1871, construction began on a new courthouse for Osborne County. This project brought many new people to Natoma, and helped to solidify its position as the county seat.
Over the next few decades, Natoma continued to grow and prosper. In 1925, a new high school was built; and in 1957, a hospital was established. Today, Natoma is a thriving community with a proud history of growth and progress.
