Rose Hill is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 2,638. It is the county seat of Butler County.
History
Rose Hill was founded in 1857 by Rose Nichols. The town was named for her husband, George Nichols. The first post office in Rose Hill was established in 1858. George Nichols served as the first postmaster. The population of the town grew rapidly, and by 1860 it had reached 1,000 people.
The Kansas Pacific Railway (now the Union Pacific Railroad) arrived in Rose Hill in 1866. This led to a boom in economic activity, and the population of the town grew to 2,000 people by 1870. The following year, Rose Hill was incorporated as a city.
The early years of the city were marked by a series of devastating wildfires. In 1874, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district. This was followed by another fire in 1892 which destroyed over 100 homes and businesses. Despite these setbacks, the city continued to grow and prosper.
