Russell is a city in and the county seat of Russell County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 3,957. It was named after George W. Russell, secretary of the Kansas Territory.
Russell is located at 38°52′47″N 98°50′36″W (38.8797250, -98.8434321). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.75 square miles (7.11 km2), all of it land. The city lies roughly halfway between Nebraska’s capital city of Lincoln and Kansas’s capital city of Topeka along Interstate 70 in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains.
Founded in 1871 as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Despatch (BOD) stagecoach line from Atchison, KS to Denver, CO, Russell boomed following construction of its Union Pacific Railroad station just one year later in 1872 when it became an important shipping point for Texas Longhorn cattle being driven north along the Chisholm Trail from Texas to Dodge City and other feeding grounds and stockyards in central and eastern Kansas where they were fattened for slaughter and shipment back east by rail to meet booming consumer demand for beef following the end of the American Civil War in 1865.
