Selden was founded in 1886. The city was named for Walter B. Selden, a railroad official.

Selden is located at 38°52′49″N 100°43′53″W / 38.88028°N 100.73139°W / 38.88028; -100.73139 (38.880242, -100.731298), at an elevation of 2,077 feet (633 m).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1 square mile (2 km²), all land.

The History of Selden

Selden was originally called Proposed City, and under the latter name was platted in 1885 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was extended to that point. The first post office in Selden was established in 1886.

In 1888, Selden became an incorporated city.

The name of the city is a corruption of that of John A. Seldomridge, who homesteaded near there in March 1873.
