Sharon Springs was established in 1871 as a stop on the Smoky Hill Trail, a stagecoach route between Atchison and Denver. The town was named for Sharon Turner, daughter of one of the first settlers.

In 1867, the first post office was established and in 1869, the first school was built. Sharon Springs flourished for many years as a health resort and attracted visitors from all over the country.
However, by the early 1900s, competition from other resorts and the development of new medical treatments for various ailments led to a decline in visitors to Sharon Springs. The hotel closed in 1914 and the last spa closed in 1952. Since that time, Sharon Springs has been a sleepy little town with a population that has fluctuated between 200 and 300 people.
