Introduction
Spring Hill is a city in Johnson and Miami counties in the U.S. state of Kansas, and a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The city is located along Interstate 35 in northeastern Kansas, between Olathe to the west and Gardner to the east. The city was founded in 1956 as part of the Johnson County Spring Hill development project.
History
The first recorded history of Spring Hill began in the late 1830s when Mormon settlers from Missouri began moving into the area. The Mormons had been driven out of Missouri by mob violence and were looking for a place to settle where they could practice their religion in peace. They found what they were looking for in Spring Hill, which was then part of the Kansas Territory.
The Mormon settlers built a small fort in Spring Hill, which served as a refuge from hostile Native Americans and also as a base for missionary work among the tribes. In 1838, a group of Mormons from Spring Hill joined forces with another group from Missouri and founded the city of Far West, Missouri. This city quickly became the center of Mormon activity in the Midwest.
However, tensions between the Mormons and their non-Mormon neighbors soon boiled over into violence. In 1838, Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs issued an extermination order against the Mormons, resulting in the forced eviction of several thousand Mormons from their homes. Many of these refugees made their way to Spring Hill, where they were welcomed by their fellow Mormons.
The Mormon War ended in 1839 with a truce between the Mormons and the US government. However, hostilities between Mormons and non-Mormons continued to simmer, and in 1844 Mormon prophet Joseph Smith was assassinated by a mob in Illinois. This event led to open warfare between Mormons and non-Mormons in Illinois, which eventually spread to Kansas.
In October 1856, Mormon settlers inSpring Hill were attacked by a band of Kansas militiamen known as “Border Ruffians.” The Ruffians looted and burned several houses before being driven off by Mormon militia from Far West, Missouri. This attack occurred just two days before the infamous sack of Lawrenceby proslavery forces from Missouri, which was one of the opening salvos in Bleeding Kansas.
After the outbreak of the Civil Warin 1861, many young men from Spring Hill enlisted in Confederate Army units raised in Kansas. However, there is no record of any major military action taking place in or near Spring Hill during the war.
In 1866, after the war ended, a group of disaffected former Confederates known as “Jayhawkers” raided Lawrenceand other Kansas towns that had been sympathetic to the Confederacy during the war. They were met with resistance in Spring Hill by a small force of militia under future Kansas governor John Pussey Dailey. The Jayhawkers retreated after a brief exchange of gunfire and no casualties were reported on either side.
After this incident, relations between Jayhawkers and Confederates gradually improved and many former enemies became friends and allies. This was especially true inSpring Hill, where many Jayhawkers had married into prominent Confederate families duringthe war

Spring Hill is located in northeastern Kansas, in Johnson County. The city lies along Interstate 35 approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,257 people, 857 households, and 609 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,136.5 inhabitants per square mile (438.8/km2). There were 921 housing units at an average density of 459.9 per square mile (177.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.2% White, 0.9% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5% of the population
