Zona Rosa was developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s on what was then farmland northwest of Kansas City International Airport. The name “Zona Rosa” is Spanish for “pink zone” or “red light district”.
The development of Zona Rosa coincided with a major redevelopment initiative for the nearby Kansas City International Airport. In 1977, the Fairfax Assembly Plant closed and 4,600 jobs vanished almost overnight. In an effort to revive the area’s economy, city leaders proposed an $810 million redevelopment plan for an area including KCI Airport and adjoining property to the north. The plan included a Triangle Shopping Center (now called Nordstrom Plaza), office parks, hotels, and other amenities. The centerpiece of the project was to be Zona Rosa.
