It is the flagship university of the state of Kansas and one of only four public research universities in the state. KU is a member of the NCAA’s Division I and competes in the Big 12 Conference. The university traces its origins back to March 1854, when the Massachusetts legislature chartered two institutions: one to be located near Boston and one in Lawrence, which was then part of Massachusetts but became part of the new state of Kansas when it was admitted to the Union in January 1861. The Lawrence campus continues to be home to a variety of educational programs; undergraduate education is offered through colleges of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Education. The university also offers graduate programs through its school as well as its graduate schools.
