Introduction

Wicked is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic storybook The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 2003, and its first national tour launched in 2005. Wicked has won over 100 international awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards.

The story tells the tale of two young girls who meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and popular Glinda, and the misunderstood green-skinned Elphaba.

The Plot of Wicked

The Characters of Wicked

The Wicked Witch of the West – Elphaba
The Wicked Witch of the West is the central character of Wicked. Born with emerald green skin, she is an outcast from society who grows to become a powerful political figure. She is intelligent, headstrong, and determined to make her own way in the world.

Glinda – Galinda
Glinda is a beautiful and popular girl who befriends Elphaba at school. She is kind-hearted and well-meaning, but can also be superficial and self-centered. Glinda goes on to become a successful politician in her own right.

Fiyero – Fiero
Fiyero is a handsome prince who falls in love with Elphaba. He is fun-loving and carefree, but also has a deep sense of morality. Fiyero’s relationship with Elphaba challenges him to rethink his place in the world.
