The chain is known for its use of molasses-based barbecue sauce, as well as its beef brisket sandwiches. Gates has locations in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as Overland Park, Leawood, and Olathe in Kansas.

History

Gates Bar-B-Q is a chain of barbecue restaurants founded in 1946 by George Gates and John F. Edgar in Kansas City, Missouri. The company’s slogan is “If it ain’t Gates, it ain’t barbecue.” As of 2016, there are 27 locations in the Greater Kansas City area, one location in Omaha, Nebraska and one location in Los Angeles, California.

George Gates started working at a barbecue stand called Arthur Bryant’s in Kansas City in the 1920s. In the 1940s, he and John F. Edgar opened their own stand called “Gates & Sons” at 19th and Vine Streets in Kansas City. In 1957, they moved to 17th Street and Vine, where they remained until 1986 when they moved to their current locations at 3205 E. 11th Street (in Kansas City, Missouri) and 13021 W. 87th Street Parkway (in Lenexa, Kansas).

Gates Bar-B-Q is known for its thin, vinegar-based sauce; its racks of slow-cooked ribs; and its burnt ends, which are the crispier pieces of meat from the ends of the racks of ribs.

The company is best known for its burnt ends, which are a type of pork that is slow-cooked until it is very tender and then smoked for several hours.

The company’s original location was in the Oldsmobile Building on Main Street, but it moved to its current location on the Country Club Plaza in 1968. The Plaza location is the largest of the five restaurants, and it also has a private dining room and an outdoor patio.

The other four Jack Stack locations are in Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, and Shawnee.
