The Early Days of Basketball
Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. Naismith was a physical education teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. He came up with the game as a way to keep his students active during the cold winter months. The game quickly gained popularity and by the early 1900s, professional leagues were formed.
The game is created
In 1891, a physical education instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts named James Naismith was looking for a game that could be played indoors during the winter months. He came up with the concept of a game in which two teams would try to score by throwing a ball into a basket.
The first game of basketball was played on December 21, 1891. Naismith nailed a peach basket to the balcony of the YMCA gymnasium and divided his class of 18 men into two teams of nine players each. The teams played to a score of 1-0, with the lone point scored when one player tossed the ball into the basket from under the gymnasium’s running track.
Basketball quickly became popular on college campuses and then spread to high schools and recreation leagues across the country. In 1936, basketball became an Olympic sport. FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, was founded in 1932 to govern international competition. The first FIBA World Championship for Men was held in Argentina in 1950.
The game quickly gains popularity
Basketball became popular quickly after it was invented. Within a few years, it was being played at YMCAs and colleges across the country. The game was particularly popular among young people, who appreciated its fast pace and relatively simple rules.
In 1892, the first professional basketball league, the National Basketball League, was founded. This league did not last long, but it did pave the way for future professional organizations. In 1896, another professional league, the American Basketball League, was founded. This league also lasted only a few years.
In 1898, yet another professional basketball league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), was founded. The NBA is the oldest professional basketball organization in the United States and is still in operation today.
Kansas and the Birth of Basketball
The game of basketball has come a long way since its humble beginnings in a small town in Kansas. The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, who was looking for a way to keep his students occupied during the winter months. He came up with the idea of a game that could be played indoors, using a soccer ball and two peach baskets.
The game is played in Kansas
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. However, the game’s roots can be traced back to Kansas.
In 1891, the first college basketball game was played at Iowa Wesleyan University between Iowa Wesleyan and Grinnell College. The game was played using nine players on each team and ended in a 32-28 Grinnell victory.
However, the first real college basketball game is generally accepted to have been played two years later between Oberlin College and Wittenberg University on February 8, 1893. The game was played using the new “invention” of Dr. Naismith with teams of five players each and ended in a 15-15 tie.
Interestingly, both of these early college basketball games were played using the so-called “Kansas rules.” These rules had been developed by Dr. Naismith while he was working at a YMCA in Topeka, Kansas from 1898 to 1899. It wasn’t until after he had moved to Springfield that he developed the now-famous 13 rules of basketball.
So, while basketball may have been invented in Massachusetts, it seems that the sport has its earliest roots in Kansas.
The game becomes popular in Kansas
Basketball quickly became popular at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, and within a few years, the game had spread to other parts of the country. One of the first places outside of Massachusetts where basketball gained popularity was Kansas.
The game was first introduced to Kansas in 1891 by James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. Naismith had been hired as a physical education instructor at the YMCA in Topeka, Kansas. He soon began teaching basketball to his students.
The game quickly caught on in Kansas. In 1894, the first professional basketball game was played in Troy, Kansas. Within a few years, there were professional teams in several Kansas cities, including Wichita, Topeka, and Atchison.
Basketball remained popular in Kansas even after it began to gain popularity elsewhere in the country. In 1908, the University of Kansas became one of the first colleges to field a basketball team. The Jayhawks went on to win several conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA tournament.
The First Professional Basketball League
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the most popular basketball league in the world, but it was not the first professional basketball league. Professional basketball began in 1897 with the formation of the National Basketball League (NBL). The NBL was formed by owners of YMCA’s in Midwest cities of the United States.
The league is formed
In 1898, the first professional basketball league was formed in northeastern Pennsylvania. The league was called the National Basketball League (NBL) and had six teams from Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, pottsville and Reading. The NBL was the first attempt to create a professional basketball league and lasted for only two seasons.
The league quickly gains popularity
In just a few years, the new professional league was doing quite well. It was so successful that other leagues began to pop up all over the country. These upstart leagues were filled with talented players who were looking for a chance to prove themselves. The new professional league quickly became the premier basketball league in the country.

Naismith was looking for a way to keep his students active during the winter months. So, he came up with the idea of a game that could be played indoors. He hung two peach baskets at either end of the gymnasium and divided his students into two teams. The objective of the game was to throw a ball into the opposing team’s basket.
