Kansas has two senators in the United States Senate – Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts. Jerry Moran has been a senator since 2011, and Pat Roberts has been a senator since 1997.
Pat Roberts
Pat Roberts (born April 20, 1936) is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Kansas. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, Roberts spent eight years there before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988. He has been reelected four times and is currently serving his fourth term in office.
Jerry Moran
Jerry Moran is the junior United States Senator from Kansas. He is a member of the Republican Party. First elected to the Senate in 2010, he defeated Democrat Lisa Johnston.

Pat Roberts
Pat Roberts (born 1936) is an American politician who serves as the senior United States Senator from Kansas. A member of the Republican Party, Roberts has served in the Senate since 1997 and previously served as Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2007 to 2009. He is the state’s senior senator and former Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
Early Life and Career
Pat Roberts was born on April 20, 1936, in Topeka, Kansas. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas State University in 1958 and then served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. He later worked as a newspaper reporter and editor before moving into politics.
In 1981, Roberts was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. In 1989, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he has served ever since. He is currently the chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.
Roberts is considered a moderate Republican and has been endorsed by both the National Rifle Association and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He is up for reelection in 2020.
Jerry Moran was born on May 29, 1954, in Great Bend, Kansas. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 1976 and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979. After working in private practice for several years, Moran was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, where he served for 14 years. In 2010, he was elected to the U.S Senate, where he has served ever since. Moran is up for reelection in 2022.
Moran is considered a conservative Republican and has been endorsed by both the National Rifle Association and the National Right to Life Committee.
Tenure in the Senate
Each senator serves a six-year term and is elected by the people of their state. Senators take office on January 3 after the November election. They serve until January 3 six years later. For example, if a senator is elected in 2020, he or she will serve until 2026.

After a senator is elected, he or she can serve an unlimited number of six-year terms. The Constitution does not place a limit on the number of terms a senator can serve. However, senators are subject to reelection campaigns every six years.

Jerry Moran
Jerry Moran is the junior United States Senator from Kansas. He is a member of the Republican Party. First elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Moran serves on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee and its Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, which funds critical law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, NASA, and NOAA. He also is a member of the Senate Commerce Committee and chairs its Consumer Protection Subcommittee.
Early Life and Career
Senator Jerry Moran was born in Great Bend, Kansas, on May 29, 1954. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1976. After graduation, Moran worked as a banker and small business owner before being elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1980. He served in the state legislature for 12 years before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996.
In 2010, Moran was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he has served on several committees, including the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; and the Committee on Finance. He also serves as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
