The team plays its home games at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, which is also site of the team headquarters and training facility. The franchise struggled during their nine-season stay in Dallas; they only had two winning seasons until they relocated to Kansas City. They have never returned to the Super Bowl since 1970 despite having some of the league’s best players during this time period including Hall of Famers Bobby Bell, Willis Reed, Curley Culp, Lester Hayes, Gary Green, Otis Taylor, Emmitt Thomas and Len Dawson; five former head coaches have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Hank Stram, Marv Levy, Bud Grant, Dick Vermeil and Marty Schottenheimer.
In 2019 under first-year head coach Andy Reid and led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive end Frank Clark; the Chiefs won 12 games for their best season since 2003 before defeating their division rival Los Angeles Chargers in overtime during the AFC Wild Card game; this victory ended a 25-year playoff win drought which was tied for 2nd longest in NFL history at that time behind only Detroit’s 27 years from 1957 to 1993 – only to be surpassed by Miami who went 26 years from 1985 to 2016 without winning a playoff game. In the AFC Divisional Round they defeated eventual Super Bowl LIV champions New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football in primetime on January 20 en route to their first AFC Championship Game appearance since 1994 where they narrowly lost to eventual Super Bowl LIV champions San Francisco 49ers despite having a chance to tie or win late in regulation or win in overtime; this result left them one game shy from becoming just the 2nd team after New England (1996) to appear in back-to-back Super Bowls having lost 8 previous times previously ( IV 1968–1969; VIII 1973–1974; XIII 1978–1979; XVI 1981–1982; XVIII 1983–1984 XIX 1988–1989 XXIV 1991–1992 XXX 1994–1995 XXXI 1997–1998 XXXVI 2001–2002 XL 2007–2008).
