He originally wanted to name the team the “Kansas City Mavericks”, but then-Kansas City mayor Harold Roe Bartle convinced him to choose “Chiefs” instead because of the Native American heritage in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after ) to defeat an NFL team () in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated Minnesota in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970 remains the club’s last championship game appearance to date, and occurred in what was then considered to be the greatest Super Bowl ever played—a contest that earned it Super Bowl MVP honors for quarterback Len Dawson and defensive cornerback Fred Williamson.
