During Vermeil’s tenure he led KC back into relevancy after years of struggles following Hank Stram/Marty Schottenheimer era highlighted by signing controversial RB Priest Holmes away from San Francisco 49ers practice squad late 1999 after being let go by Baltimore Ravens also along way acquiring multiple future Hall Of Famers including trading draft picks acquiring WR/PR/KR Dante Hall off waivers from Washington Redskins also signing potential HOF QB Trent Green away from St Louis Rams via free agency being rewarded soon latter when Green went down midway through third preseason game against Cleveland Browns suffering career threatening concussion getting replaced by backup QB Damon Huard who would lead KC remainder injury replacement going 13-3 en route reaching 2004 AFC Wild Card game where they would get upset 27-24 at home against eventual champion Indianapolis Colts.[citation needed]
