Upcoming Games

The Kansas City Chiefs have a bye this week but will be back in action on Monday Night Football in Week 10. They’ll take on the Los Angeles Chargers on the road. The Chiefs are currently 6-3 and in second place in the AFC West. The Chargers are 5-6 and in third place in the division.

September

The Kansas City Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, and assumed its current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.

The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred coincidentally on the final day of the 1969 regular season (December 28). The Chiefs were also the second team overall to win their second Super Bowl title against their original AFL rivals San Diego Chargers (who won their first title in 1963), defeating them 24–16 in Super Bowl LIV, fifty years after their first such victory—and exactly fifty years to the day after their final championship game appearance and victory against Minnesota in 1970—on February 2, 2020.

The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred in front of a then-record crowd of 82,094 people at Tulane Stadium. Between 2009 and 2018, the Chiefs compiled a regular season record of 101 wins and 59 losses under head coach Todd Haley and general manager Scott Pioli; this included five playoff appearances and three trips to the AFC Championship game (in 2010 under Haley/Pioli, 2016 under head coach Andy Reid, and 2018 under Reid/general manager Brett Veach) during that span. However, despite these successes—and notwithstanding nine playoff berths overall between 1962 and 2018—the franchise has yet to win a Super Bowl championship or even appear in one since its lone win over 50 years ago.
