The Chiefs were also the second team (after the Green Bay Packers) to appear in more than one Super Bowl (and the first AFL team to do so), winning Super Bowl IV and Super Bowl LIV. Between 1991 and 1993, they appeared in three consecutive AFC Championship Games, but lost each time to teams that would go on to win that year’s Super Bowl—the Bills each time for XXVIII and XLI and again for LIII—making them one of only two teams ever (along with Miami from 1971–73) to lose three consecutive AFC Championship Games; all three losses were by four points or less.

The rivalry between the Chiefs and Raiders is among the oldest and most storied in American football history. It began when Original AFL teams Kansas City Chiefs (then Dallas Texans) owner Lamar Hunt hired former Oakland Raiders head coach Hank Stram to be his head coach/general manager in January 1963.[1][2] When Oakland joined the NFL as part of an AFL-NFL merger prior to the 1970 season,[3] it intensified when both teams were placed in newly created AFC West division.[4][5]

The Mavericks replaced the departing Kansas City Blades of the now-defunct Central Hockey League. After one season in the CHL, the Mavericks joined the ECHL when the league absorbed seven of the eight remaining CHL teams.

In their first season in the ECHL, the Mavericks finished with a 34–32–6 record and made the playoffs, losing to the eventual Kelly Cup champions, Idaho Steelheads, in six games.

During their second season, former St. Louis Blues captain Dallas Drake was named head coach and led the team to a 43-win season. The Mavericks qualified for the playoffs for a second consecutive year and defeated Colorado in seven games before losing to Alaska in five games during Round 2.

In September 2012, it was announced that Harry Swayne would be taking over as head coach of the Mavericks for their 2012–13 season. Swayne had previously served as an assistant coach with San Antonio during their 2011–12 campaign when they won both the regular season and playoff championships.
