The Kansas City Chiefs have had a number of backup quarterbacks over the years. Here is a look at some of the more notable ones:

-Trent Green: Green was the Chiefs starter for seven seasons before suffering a career-threatening injury in 2005. He was replaced by Damon Huard and then Brodie Croyle. Green eventually regained his starting spot and led the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2006 and 2007.

-Matt Cassel: Cassel took over for an injured Green in 2009 and had a breakout season, leading the Chiefs to the playoffs. He was traded to the Vikings in 2013 after being replaced by Alex Smith.

-Chase Daniel: Daniel signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2013 and served as their backup for three seasons. He started one game in 2016 when Smith was injured and played well, leading the Chiefs to a win. Daniel left Kansas City after the 2017 season to sign with the Saints.

The Kansas City Chiefs Backup Quarterback Candidate Roster

As of right now, the Kansas City Chiefs have three backup quarterback candidates vying for the role behind starter Patrick Mahomes. Those three quarterbacks are Chad Henne, Matt McGloin, and Kyle Shurmur.

Chad Henne is a veteran quarterback who has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins. He has started 96 games in his NFL career, and has thrown for over 11,000 yards and 61 touchdowns. Henne last played in 2018, starting four games for the Jacksonville Jaguars while Blake Bortles was injured.

Matt McGloin is a former Penn State quarterback who has spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. In his NFL career, he has appeared in eight games, starting six of them. He has thrown for 1,868 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career. McGloin last played in 2017 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kyle Shurmur is a former Vanderbilt quarterback who was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has yet to see any regular season playing time in his NFL career.
