The Team’s History
The Denver Broncos date back to 1959, when the American Football League was formed. The team’s first owner was Bob Howsam, who also owned Minor League Baseball’s Denver Bears. The Bears’ Stadium was home to the Broncos for their first two seasons. In 1961, the team moved to Mile High Stadium, which would be their home for the next 50 years.
The Broncos’ first head coach was Jack Faulkner, who led the team for their inaugural season in 1960. Faulkner was replaced by Frank Filchock in 1961, but Filchock only lasted one season before he was replaced by Lou Saban. Saban would go on to coach the team for four seasons, compiling a record of 27-22-1.
In 1967, Saban was replaced by John Ralston, who would lead the team to their first winning season and playoff appearance in 1971. After back-to-back losing seasons, Ralston resigned and was replaced by Red Miller. Under Miller, the Broncos won their first division title in 1977 and made it to Super Bowl XII, where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys 27-10.
After three more losing seasons, Miller was replaced by Dan Reeves as head coach/general manager in 1981. Reeves would go on to have great success with the team, leading them to six playoff appearances in eight seasons and Super Bowl XXI and XXII (both losses). In 1989, Reeves signed quarterback John Elway, who would go on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Broncos.
In 1991, Reeves infamously tried to replace Elway with Steve Young as starting quarterback; Elway took issue with this and threatened to retire if he wasn’t allowed to compete for the starting job. As a result of this incident (among others), Reeves was fired following the 1992 season and replaced by Wade Phillips. Phillips coached the Broncos for two seasons before being replaced by Mike Shanahan in 1995. Shanahan would go on to have great success with Elway and the Broncos, winning back-to-back Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII following the 1997 and 1998 seasons respectively; he is currently the winningest head coach in franchise history.
Following a disappointing 8-8 season in 1999 (a yearmarred by Elway’s retirement), Shanahan was fired and replaced by Brian Billick as offensive coordinator; under Billick’s guidance, quarterback Bubby Brister had a career year and ledthe teamto an AFC Wild Card berth. However, Billick only lasted one season before being let go himself; he was succeeded by Gary Kubiak, who served as offensive coordinator for two seasons before being promotedtohead coach following Shanahan’s departure forthe Washington Redskinsin 2006 (Kubiak had previously served as Shanahan’s offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos from 1995-2005).
