The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the AFL. In 1963, the team moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and were renamed the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have appeared in eight Super Bowls, winning three of them.

The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is worth an estimated $1.85 billion ($2.14 billion including income from stadium naming rights), and are the 28th richest franchise in the NFL, tied with the Carolina Panthers.
The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after San Diego) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated Minnesota 50–10 in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970 remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred partially because starting quarterback Len Dawson suffered a separated shoulder that forced him to leave early in the contest; backup Mike Livingston led them to victory playing most of rest of game after that. The Chiefs were also a joint venture with then-rival Oakland Raiders where they won two Super Bowls back-to-back in Super Bowls XVIII (1983) and XIX (1984), respectively defeating NFC teams: the Raiders defeated Washington 38–9 while San Francisco defeated Miami 38–16; it is also notable those were Don Shula’s only 2 playoff losses with Miami (and his only 2 losses period to AFC teams between 1971-88). The Chiefs hold a 6–5 record in 10 playoff appearances overall (a .545 winning percentage), and are 2–1 at home during Wild Card weekend games (a .667 winning percentage).

The Chiefs have won ten AFC championships, more than any other team in the AFC. They are also one of three AFL teams to predate the AFL–NFL merger who still exists today, along with the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets; and one of two AFL teams to have won an AFL championship after the merger, along with the 49ers. The franchise has qualified for the playoffs 22 times since 1970 (including ten times in a row from 1990 to 1999), winning nine AFC West divisional titles and eight AFC championships. Their most successful season came in 1969 when they captured their only Super Bowl title, resulting in them becoming known as “the Super Bowl champions”.
