Regular Season
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO. While Hunt’s grandson, David, serves as chief operating officer.
The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date,[8] and occurred in front of a then-Super Bowl record crowd of 82,922 people at Tulane Stadium.[9] In 1972, the Chiefs were one of three AFC teams that began play in 1972 that had never played in an AFL or NFL championship game previously;[10] the others were the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins (who would go on to meet each other that season in Super Bowl VII).[11][12] Pittsburgh and Miami both joined from what was then known as “the other league”, while Kansas City joined after winning three consecutive AFL Championships.[10]
Kansas City’s Record
This week, Kansas City is playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. The last time these two teams faced each other was in 2016, when Kansas City won 20-12. This was also the Steelers’ last loss in a season where they went on to win the Super Bowl.
Pre-Season
In the National Football League (NFL), the preseason is the exhibition season that occurs prior to the regular season. The regular season is when games count towards a team’s record. The preseason began on August 1, and ended on August 31. The Kansas City Chiefs were 4-0 in the preseason.
