The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the AFL. In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at just over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO. While Dallas Texans owner Lamar Hunt was attending the 1957 National Football League Championship Game in New York City, he came up with the idea for a new professional football league that would rival the NFL. Initially there were two agreed upon expansion teams for this new league, one being in Dallas and the other in Minneapolis-St. Paul; however, when one of the original owners backed out, Hunt was given permission to move his team to Kansas City instead.

The team began to play in 1960 at Cotton Bowl Stadium, which served as their home stadium for 11 seasons, through 1971. They qualified to play in the AFL Championship Game four times during this span—tying for first place in 1961 with an 11–3 record; losing to eventual champion Houston Oilers in 1962 with a 9–6 record; again tying for first place in 1966 with an 11–2–1 record before losing a playoff game for the right to go to Super Bowl I against Green Bay Packers; and finally reaching and losing Super Bowl IV against Minnesota Vikings after posting an 11–2–1 record during the 1969 regular season, leading up to their victory in 1970 over Oakland Raiders for their first ever Super Bowl win. They also appeared once more prior to the AFL–NFL merger , when they won the pre-merger AFL Championship game following Flint City’s victory over Buffalo Bills but lost 1967’s rematch 30-27 at Municipal Stadium against Hank Stram’s eventual Super Bowl winning Hoosiers squad that featured eventual Hall-of-Famers Len Dawson , Bobby Bell , Emmitt Thomas , Curley Culp , Otis Taylor , Willie Lanier & Jan Stenerud amongst other future all-pros & stars while coached by Stram himself on January 15th 1968 which is considered one of if not THE greatest game ever played not just in sports history but perhaps entertainment history itself .
