Alex Smith

Alex Smith was born in Seattle, Washington and he played college football at the University of Utah. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.

Traded to the Washington Redskins

In the 2018 NFL season, Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins. In his first season with the team, he started all 16 games, throwing for a career-high 4,598 yards and 30 touchdowns, with just seven interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time in his career.

Suffered a season-ending injury

On November 18, 2018, Smith suffered a season-ending injury in a 23–20 loss to the Houston Texans after suffering a compound fractures in his tibia and fibula. He was replaced by backup quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played college football at Texas Tech, where he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. As a rookie, Mahomes was the backup to Alex Smith. He became the starter in 2018, and led the Chiefs to their first AFC Championship Game appearance in 25 years.

Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In his first career NFL start, he threw for 284 yards and an touchdown in a win over the Denver Broncos. The following week, against the Philadelphia Eagles, he had a then career-high 368 passing yards and four touchdowns as the Chiefs won 42–37. In Week 3, against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes recorded his first career touchdown pass on a five-yard completion to Kareem Hunt en route to 304 passing yards as the Chiefs won 24–10. After a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5, he recorded 333 passing yards and four touchdowns in a 45–10 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.

Became the starting quarterback

In October 2017, Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback after Alex Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins. In his first season as a starter, he led the Chiefs to an AFC West division title with a record of 10–6. He also was selected for the Pro Bowl and named NFL Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. The following season, he led the Chiefs to their first AFC Championship Game appearance since 1994 and their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years. In Super Bowl LIV, Mahomes led the team to a 31–20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, earning him Super Bowl MVP honors.

Chad Henne

Signed by the Kansas City Chiefs

Chad Henne is an American football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football at Michigan.

Henne has also been a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Jets.

Named the backup quarterback

Chad Henne was named the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs on September 3, 2019. He will serve as the backup to starter Patrick Mahomes. Henne has played in the NFL for 11 seasons and has appeared in 86 career games, including 61 starts.
