The Quarterback Position
The quarterback is the most important position on the football field. They are responsible for the play calling and leading the team. A good quarterback can make or break a team. So, who is the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs?
The importance of the quarterback
As the most important position in football, quarterbacks touch the ball on almost every play from scrimmage. A quarterback’s primary responsibilities are to pass the ball to an eligible receiver and to hand the ball off to a running back.
A quarterback must possess a number of skills to succeed at the position. These skills include arm strength, accuracy, decision making, field vision, timing, mobility and leadership. While some quarterbacks rely on their strong arm to make plays, others rely on their mobility and agility to keep plays alive or pick up yards when needed.
The best quarterbacks are able to read defenses and make quick decisions on where to deliver the ball. They also have the ability to anticipate where receivers will be and make throws while under pressure from defenders. Good quarterbacks possess all of these skills and more.
The quarterback’s responsibilities
The quarterback is the leader of the offense and is responsible for running the play that is called, making sure everyone is lined up correctly, and getting the ball to the right receiver. The quarterback position is one of the most important positions on the field, and quarterbacks are often considered the face of their team.
The Current Quarterback
The Kansas City Chiefs are currently led by Quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes took over the starting role in 2017 after Alex Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins. Mahomes helped lead the Chiefs to an AFC Championship in 2018 and was named MVP of the NFL in 2018.
Alex Smith
The Chief’s selected Alex Smith as the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Smith played college football at the University of Utah, where he was a two-time All-American and led his team to an undefeated season in 2004. After playing his first three seasons with the Chiefs, Smith was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. He spent five seasons with the 49ers, before being traded back to the Chiefs in 2017.
His career
Though he was never the first-string quarterback, Mahomes became the starter in his sophomore year. In his first year as a starter, he completed 56 of 82 passes for 817 yards and 10 touchdowns. The following year, as a junior, he led the team to the Big 12 Championship game with a record of 11–1. He threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns that season, becoming only the second quarterback in NCAA Division I FBS history to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season. Following his successful junior year, Mahomes decided to forgo his senior year and entered the 2017 NFL Draft.

Patrick Mahomes
