The Candidates for the Starting Quarterback Position
The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to decide on who their starting quarterback will be for the 2019 season.
The candidates for the position are incumbent starter Patrick Mahomes, backup Chad Henne, and rookie first-round pick out of Mississippi State, Darwin Thompson.
Mahomes, the 2017 NFL Draft 10th overall pick by the Chiefs, is the favorite to win the job. The 23-year-old completed 66 percent of his passes for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 16 starts last season en route to being named NFL MVP.
Henne, 34, has started 58 games in his 11-year NFL career. He completed 59 percent of his passes for 3,241 yards with 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 19 starts for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2011 to 2012. Henne has not started an NFL game since 2014.
Thompson was selected by the Chiefs with the 63rd overall pick in this year’s draft. The 22-year-old rushed for 1,444 yards and 14 touchdowns on 210 carries (6.9 yards per carry) while adding 32 catches for 298 yards and four touchdowns through the air in 13 games (11 starts) last season at Mississippi State.
The Pros and Cons of Each Candidate
The Kansas City Chiefs have three main candidates for their starting quarterback position: Alex Smith, Tyler Bray, and Patrick Mahomes. Alex Smith is the incumbent starter and has been with the team for five seasons. Tyler Bray is a backup quarterback who has been with the team for four seasons. Patrick Mahomes is a rookie quarterback who was drafted by the team in 2017.
Each candidate has their pros and cons. Alex Smith is a veteran quarterback who has started in many big games, including the playoffs. He is a good leader and has a strong arm. However, he can be conservative at times and has trouble throwing the deep ball. Tyler Bray has a strong arm and can make all the throws. He is also very tall, which can be an advantage in the pocket. However, he does not have much starting experience and can be inconsistent at times. Patrick Mahomes is very talented and has a rocket arm. He is also very mobile and can make plays with his feet. However, he is a rookie and will need time to develop.
The Chiefs will have to decide which quarterback gives them the best chance to win now and in the future. All three candidates have their pros and cons, so it will be an interesting decision for the team to make.
