Lamar Hunt

In 1963, Lamar Hunt became the founding owner of the American Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. The team has been owned by the Hunt family for over half a century, making them one of the longest-tenured ownership groups in professional sports. Despite their recent struggles, the Chiefs are one of the most successful franchises in the NFL with a rich history.

Early life

Lamar Hunt was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, on August 2, 1932, the son of oilman H.L. Hunt and his wife Lyda Bunker. He had two older sisters, Swanee and Swanee’s twin Margaret Hunt Hill. Lamar’s father made him a millionaire at age 12 with a $1,000 check given to him as a birthday present. When Lamar was 14 years old he was sent to Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana for one year due to poor grades at River Oaks Academy in Dallas. After graduating from Culver he attended The Lawrenceville School for one year before entering the Hills School in Pennsylvania in 1943 where he graduated from high school in 1945. Lamar’s father wanted him to go to Southern Methodist University (SMU) however after being rejected due to his father’s wealth he ended up attending the University of Texas at Austin on an academic scholarship and majored in geology.

American Football League

In the early 1960s, professional football was booming. The National Football League (NFL) had just completed its most successful decade to date, and attendance and revenues were at all-time highs. Meanwhile, the American Football League (AFL) was a new rival league that had begun play in 1960. The upstart AFL was struggling to find its place in the crowded sports landscape, and it was clear that it needed to establish itself as a serious competitor to the NFL if it was going to survive.

Lamar Hunt was one of the original founders of the AFL, and he saw an opportunity to make his mark on the history of professional football. In 1963, he bought a franchise in Dallas that would become the Kansas City Chiefs. He also played a key role in negotiating the landmark television contract that helped make the AFL viable in its early years.

Hunt was a visionary owner who helped build the Chiefs into one of the most successful franchises in professional football. Under his leadership, the Chiefs won three AFL championships and Super Bowl IV. He was inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Kansas City Sports Hall of Fame, and his impact on the game of football is still felt today.
