In 1968, the team held a name-the-team contest that received more than 17,000 entries and ultimately selected six finalists: Bisquick, Mudsocks (a play on Mudlunders),Royals, Confederates, Bluejays, and A’s—the last being short for “Agriculturists”, a nod to Kansas City’s status at that time as the nation’s leading center for livestock exchangings and exchanges.

The Gothams, as the Giants were originally known, entered the National League in 1883, while their other club, the Metropolitans played in the American Association (a Players’ League precursor). Nearly half of the original Gotham players were members of Brooklyn’s Excelsior Club, many of whom Mutrie recruited.
