The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The Chiefs were founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and were a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO. While Hunt’s granddaughter, Tavia, is the majority owner.

The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970,[1][2] remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date,[3] and occurred in front of a then-record crowd of 82,094 people at Tulane Stadium.[4][5] The Super Bowl win washyde_greenthe franchise’s first NFL championship game appearance after unsuccessful trips to three consecutive NFL Championship Games from 1967 to 1969.[6][7][8] Equally important was the victory against Minnesota on December 28 that allowed Kansas City to clinch their first-ever playoff berth following an initial eight-year drought dating back to 1960.[9]

In total, the Chiefs have appeared in seven AFC Championship Games (1970,, 1971,, 1973,, 1974,, 2019,) – but lost each time by an average margin of 16 points.[10] They have made ten trips to the playoffs overall – winning seven times – but have not hosted or played in a conference championship game since 1994., when Patrick Mahomes was five years old.[11][12]
