They were the better team
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.
The team began play in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, an expansion team of the American Football League (AFL). They were created when Lamar Hunt, son of oilman H. L. Hunt Jr., helped form a new football league to compete with the established National Football League (NFL). In 1962, after the Texans struggled to find players and failed to sign enough good ones, they moved from Dallas to Kansas City and changed their name to the Chiefs.
In their first season in Kansas City, they finished with a 1–12–1 record. The following year saw significant improvement, with six wins against nine losses, but it was not enough to make the playoffs. Despite having one of the worst records in football history (3–11), they were saved from last place in their division by a rule that awarded division titles on won-lost percentage rather than win-loss record; because there were only two teams with worse records than them—the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills—the Chiefs won their division due largely to playing fewer games than either of those teams did that season thanks to two forfeited games against them by those teams (one each).
In 1964 they returned to prominence with an 11–3 record and a victory over defending AFL Champion San Diego Chargers in double overtime in AFL Championship game that earned them a spot in NFL Championship game against Buffalo Bills which they lost 7–27 despite outgaining Bills 369 yards to 338 yards. Alex Karras became head coach for 1965 season starting 1–6 but leading team to 7–5–2 finish including three wins against eventual Super Bowl I participants Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions en route to AFL Western Conference title for second time in three years; this time hosting and losing AFL Championship game rematch against Buffalo Bills 23-0 despite outgaining Bills 320 yards to 282 yards .
