The privately owned company was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948, and his son, Jim France, has been the CEO since August 6, 2018. NASCAR is the governing body for stock-car racing in the United States. The three largest racing-series sanctioned by NASCAR are the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, the Xfinity Series, and the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. NASCAR also sanctions the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, and the NASCAR Regional & Touring Series.

The NASCAR Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). The series began life as the Strictly Stock Division in 1949, and was renamed the Grand National Division in 1950. It then became the Winston Cup Grand National Division in 1971, before taking on its current title of NASCAR Cup Series in 2004.
There are three national touring series under the NASCAR banner:
-The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, which races trucks;
-The NASCAR Xfinity Series, which races cars similar to those used in the Cup Series; and
-The NASCAR Pinty’s Series, which races cars similar to those used in the Xfinity Series but is specific to Canada.
There are also several regional touring series and local weekly racing series across North America.
